A Crack in the Sidewalk

Contact Photo is pleased to announce Tyler Woodford’s solo exhibition, A Crack in the Sidewalk, opening on Friday, April 12 from 6 - 8 pm, at 51 Porter Ave, Brooklyn.

In this exhibition, Woodford showcases 23 hand-made Silver Gelatin Prints of a project that he has been pursuing for 3 years, where he travels to the outer boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn to photograph the slow and empty neighborhoods that rarely attract visitors.

Ironically, these places caught the attention of Woodford, who relocated to NYC from Ventura, California, in 2017 to pursue street photography. In 2021, affected by the aftermath of the pandemic, he felt the need to get away from the bustling city and from street photography altogether, and that desire became the driving force behind this tranquil body of work.

The common thread running through the images is the co-presence of two contrasting elements. One is the traces of humans and the mass-produced objects left behind: tire marks, warped fences, neglected cars, faded signs, and fallen tombstones. The other is the nature that has spread over these structures: Over-grown weeds, vines climbing garage doors, and trees thriving after cracking the concrete pavement. It is a scenery that everyone is familiar with, but no one pays attention to; it is a humble and insignificant landscape of American suburbs.

Woodford embarks on a visual treasure hunt in these ordinary and unpopular sites that nature has taken over and finds endless ways to portray the passage of time. Through this exploration, he delves into the subtle beauty in the everyday that transforms an image into poignant evidence that quietly pierces our sense of mortality.
